The T’s of Migraine: Triggers and Treatment

Migraine is often considered as a part of headache. In general, migraine is more than that as it can be referred to as a neurological disorder that causes an ache on one side of the forehead. The specific pain on one side of the head can be confirmed as migraine if it comes with nausea at the same time.

Symptoms of Migraine

Migraine comes with four phases that are:

Prodrome

It is phase one. The symptoms of prodrome includes:

  • Mood changes
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Difficulty concentrating

The phase prodrome is a period of 24 hours before a headache attack.

Aura

The aura is a phase two whose symptoms are as follows:

  • Ringing in ears
  • Vision changes ( difficulty in watching or allergen eyes)
  • Muscle weakness

The phase Aura occurs five minutes to one hour before a headache attack.

Headache Attack

The phase three or the actual migraine ache, the headache attack is the most difficult period in the whole migraine phase. The symptoms are:

  • Headache(Severe) – Aches like an injury
  • Nausea
  • Sensitivity to smell
  • Sensitivity towards sound or noise
  • Sensitivity to light

This phase ends at least after four hours and maximum after 72 hours.

Postdrome

Postdrome is the last phase. The symptoms of postdrome are:

  • Pain in neck area
  • Unable to concentrate
  • Common Fatigue

The postdrome is the last phase of suffering that does not last more than 48 hours.

Triggers in Migraine

Imbalanced Hormones

Imbalance in hormones can often trigger migraines. Females are more likely to experience it because of conditions like PCOD or PCOS.

The five C’s – Very often the food a person consumes can trigger the migraine. The five C’s that leads to worsening of migraine are:

  • Chocolate: It has caffeine and the cocoa compounds that affects the neurotransmitters,hence can result in headache attacks.
  • Cheese: It is high in fat and has a strong odour that can again hit the neurotransmitters via smell and can hamper the health.
  • Cold drinks: These are very carbonated and high in sugars. The spike in sugar can be harmful and the flavor Cola in soft drinks is to be considered as the most important avoidant.
  • Citrus substance: People with migraine should not consume citrus fruits .It contains tyramine that has a significant effect on blood vessels which leads to disrupted blood flow to brain and can cause a headache attack.
  • Coffee: It acts the same as Chocolate, due to the high caffeine content, coffee should not be consumed by the people suffering from the symptoms of migraine.

Treatment of Migraine

The only one tip and technique to treat and prevent migraine is Understanding the “SEEDS.”

SEEDS is a mnemonic used for managing the migraine by lifestyle changes. The steps to be taken are:

S- sleep: it is very important to have a proper sleep schedule and 8 hours are mandatory to sleep.

E-exercise: Daily exercise is necessary to maintain the intensity and proper blood supply to body and brain.

E- eat clean: It is very important to avoid junk and the food items that includes the five C’s to not trigger the migraine.

D- dairy: Start noticing what triggers you in the migraine. Read later and work on the particular aspect.

S- stress: Migraine has its roots in stress, it is very important to keep yourself distracted from the situations that leads to stress. OTC’s can used for headache attacks.
