Talks between the two countries are set to begin on April 10 in Islamabad and Iran has said it will take part in these discussions with “complete distrust” of the United States with the initial time frame for the talks is two weeks, but it can be extended if both sides agree.

The United States and Iran have reached a critical 14-day ceasefire agreement, avoiding a massive military escalation just minutes before a U.S.-imposed deadline.
The ceasefire reportedly was announced on the 40th day of hostilities, following a period of intense pressure from Washington. U.S. President Donald Trump had previously set a strict deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, warning of “devastating attacks” that could destroy Iran’s power plants and infrastructure within hours if the maritime passage remained closed.
However, just 10 minutes before the deadline expired at 5:30 AM (IST), Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that both nations had agreed to halt military operations.
Key Terms of the Agreement
The agreement, built on a 10-point proposal from Iran is as follows-
- US should promise no more attacks on Iran.
- Iran should keep control of the Strait of Hormuz.
- Iran’s right to continue nuclear enrichment must be accepted.
- All US primary sanctions should be removed.
- All US secondary sanctions should be removed.
- All United Nations Security Council restrictions on Iran should end.
- All International Atomic Energy Agency restrictions should end.
- Iran should get compensation for war damages.
- US forces should withdraw from the region.
- All fighting should stop completely (ceasefire everywhere).

Both US and Iran have credited Pakistan for its pivotal role in mediating the crisis. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir were instrumental in facilitating the dialogue.
