The collapse reportedly occurred due to a damaged ceiling of an underground metro tunnel. Soil above the damaged ceiling flowed into the tunnel.
A large section of Samsen Road, in front of Vajira Hospital in the Dusit district, Bangkok, Thailand, collapsed on Wednesday morning, September 24. A video that is being circulated on social media shows the road slowly sinking into the ground as bystanders watch in horror.
According to the media reports, Vajira Hospital had to temporarily suspend outpatient services for safety. Around 3,500 patients with appointments were asked to reschedule.
The collapse reportedly occurred due to a damaged ceiling of an underground metro tunnel. Soil above the damaged ceiling flowed into the tunnel and the under-construction underground space, causing the collapse.
Reportedly, the site also lacked adequate supporting structures. As per the reports by media organisations, there were no casualties reported. However, three vehicles were damaged due to the collapse. The sinking road as well hit several of the electricity poles and water pipes. These were completely damaged.
Shortly after the video went viral, even the netizens were in the same shock as are the ones who eyewitnessed it.
One user pointed out that many people were standing close to the sinking road, writing, “I wouldn’t be standing so close to that expanding ledge.” Another user shared a similar opinion and said, “Absolutely no survival instinct. The ground is RAPIDLY opening up in front of you! People are so dumb.”
One user highlighted how rapidly the road was sinking, writing, “But where was it all going?! It all just kept sinking… I hope no one was hurt.” Another added, “Jesus Christ, that is terrifying.”
