Fingerprint and Facial Recognition to Replace PIN in UPI Transactions

Under this, it has come ahead that the authentication here used will be biometric information kept under the Government of India’s Aadhar Unique Identification System.

There has been revealed a modification in the case of UPI (Unified Payments Interface) payments which is set to have its commencement from October 8, 2025 (Tuesday).

UPI is the major and well known domestic payment network and from October 8, the customers in India will be able to make authorized payments using fingerprints and facial recognition. 

As per one of the recent reports, there will be government registered authentication used for this purpose. Under this, it has come ahead that the authentication here used will be biometric information kept under the Government of India’s Aadhar Unique Identification System.

Such an action has been taken for enhancing the safety matters. There will be a change from the current system, which requires a numeric PIN for payment authentication, and comes in accordance with recent guidelines from the Reserve Bank of India that allow other authentication methods.

According to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which runs UPI, intends to demonstrate this new biometric function during the current Global Fintech Festival in Mumbai.
