Jalandhar: Punjab Cane Farmers Postpone Protest, Give Govt. Four Days for SAP Decision

The farmers issued an ultimatum to the government concerning a rise in sugarcane State Advised Price (SAP), the settlement of overdue payments from sugar mills.

Sugarcane farmers from the area, who had planned to block traffic on the national highway connecting Jalandhar and Phagwara and halt rail services near Dhanowali on Friday, have postponed their action by four days.

The farmers issued an ultimatum to the government concerning a rise in sugarcane State Advised Price (SAP), the settlement of overdue payments from sugar mills, and the declaration of the cane crushing season in the mills.

The announcement of the decision came after a meeting in Chandigarh this evening between Manjit S Rai, president of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Doaba), Balwinder S Malli Nangal, president of Doaba Kisan Sangharsh Committee, and Secretary of Agriculture, Arshdeep S Thind, along with Cane Commissioner of Punjab, Amrik Singh.

Rai mentioned that the government representatives requested an extension until November 24.

“They assured us that they will convene a meeting on Monday to finalize the SAP and establish the dates for the beginning of the cane crushing season.”

“After they inform us of their decision following the meeting’s conclusion, we will reveal our plan,” stated Rai in a video message shared post-meeting.

Nangal, present at the meeting, stated, “We have received assurance that all outstanding payments to the cane farmers from the sugar mills will be released promptly.”
