US House Members Pushes Back Against Trump’s India Tariffs, Cites Consumer Harm

The legislators stated that the tariffs are unlawful, detrimental, and unjustly impact American consumers and companies.

Three US House of Representatives members have contested President Donald Trump’s choice to implement high tariffs on products from India. They have proposed a resolution to revoke the national emergency declaration that permitted tariffs to increase to 50 percent.

The legislators stated that the tariffs are unlawful, detrimental, and unjustly impact American consumers and companies.

The introduction of this initiative took place on Friday by members of Congress Deborah Ross, Marc Veasey and Raja Krishnamoorthi, their statement pertains to additional tariffs that were enacted 08/27/2025 which were placed on top of existing tariff agreements which resulted in significant increases in price for many goods imported from India to America.

Representative Ross stated that these tariffs have already hurt the citizens of North Carolina who have significant business relationships with India, and support billions of dollars in investment and thousands of jobs in North Carolina. She expressed concern about loss of these critical business relationships due to the imposition of these tariffs.

Representative Veasey called the tariffs a “tax” on the American people and stated that India is a major cultural, economic and strategic partner; these tariffs ad to the financial burden being faced by families during a time of rising costs of living. He pointed out that removal of these tariffs will allow the U.S. to enhance its economic and security relationships with India.

Representative Krishnamoorthi called for the removal of the tariffs as they disrupt supply chains, do harm to American workers and cause increased prices for American consumers. He added that removing these tariffs would create an even stronger economic and security relationship between the United States and India.

The House’s decision follows a joint initiative in the Senate aimed at restricting the President’s ability to use emergency powers for implementing trade barriers. Legislators stated that the goal is to regain Congress’s control over trade choices and enhance ties with India.

Trump initially set a 25 percent tariff on Indian products on August 1 and subsequently increased it. He stated that the action was related to India’s ongoing acquisition of Russian oil, which he asserted was contributing to financing Russia’s war in Ukraine.
