Five Killed, Several Injured as Bus Runs Over Pedestrians in Mumbai

Three females along with one male are among the deceased and eight male individuals along with one female individual received multiple injuries.

Five persons lost their lives while at least fourteen others sustained injuries when a motor vehicle operated by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) struck pedestrians on Bhandup Road in Mumbai on Monday evening, October 17, 2015. This incident occurred around 10:00 PM (IST) as per police records.

Three females along with one male are among the deceased and eight male individuals along with one female individual received multiple injuries which necessitated them being taken to the hospital via ambulance.

It appears that the motor vehicle operated by BEST struck the individuals while reversing. In response to the accident, police arrived to help direct traffic and maintain order on the street.

At the time of the accident, the operator of the bus was Santosh Ramesh Sawant (52) who was in the process of parking the vehicle while Bhagwan Bhau Ghare was the operator’s assistant or ‘conductor’.

An investigation is ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident including whether there were any mechanical issues that may have contributed.
