Jalandhar Rural Police arrested two men accused in the murder of 26-year-old Kesar Dhami following a police encounter in the Adampur area.
The accused have been identified as Chandra Shekhar, a resident of Davida Ahrana village, and Jaspal Singh of Drolli Kalan village. Both sustained bullet injuries in their legs during retaliatory firing by the police after they allegedly opened fire on a police team.
According to police, the incident occurred on January 16, when the accused rammed their motorcycle into the bike on which Kesar Dhami and his friends were riding. After Dhami fell onto the road, he was shot dead.
During the encounter, police recovered two .32-bore pistols, three live cartridges, three empty shells, and the motorcycle used in the crime.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jalandhar Rural S. Harvinder Singh Virk said an FIR has been registered at Adampur police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act. Multiple police teams were formed to track down the accused.
The SSP said police received secret information on January 18 that the accused had hidden their weapons near a motor pump close to Sant Baba Bhag Singh University and were planning to retrieve them. Police teams cordoned off the area and launched an operation.
As police approached the spot, the accused allegedly retrieved the weapons and attempted to flee. They fired three rounds at the police party, one of which hit a police vehicle. Police then retaliated in self-defence, injuring both accused before arresting them.
