FM Sitharaman presented the Union Budget and stated, “Since we took office 12 years back, the nation’s economic path has shown stability, fiscal responsibility, consistent growth, and moderate inflation.”
“This outcome stems from deliberate decisions we have taken, even during periods of uncertainty and upheaval.”
In her Budget Speech 2026, Nirmala Sitharaman announced numerous important initiatives. While Punjab’s name wasn’t referenced in Sitharaman’s Budget 2026, several of her announcements may positively impact the state, particularly the sports sector in Jalandhar and the textile sector in Ludhiana.
The UnionBudget 2026 has brought a combination of outcomes for Punjab. Sitharaman revealed substantial technological and logistical assistance for the industrial sectors of the state, yet she did not address many crucial fiscal requests put forth by the state government.
Although the Budget sets the stage for a significant advancement for MSMEs in Ludhiana and Jalandhar, it overlooked Punjab’s pressing request for a Rs 12,905 crore flood relief packageand the prompt disbursement of outstanding Rural Development Funds (RDF).
What did Punjab receive in the Union Budget 2026?

To enhance exports, Sitharaman has declared that the central government will support the international promotion of Punjab’s major products, including hosiery from Ludhiana and sports gear from Jalandhar.
An ‘Export Desk’ will be established on the CHAMPIONS portal to assist entrepreneurs inselling their products on international e-commerce platforms moreeasily.
Whilepresenting the budget, FM Sitharaman stated that India holds the capability to become a global center for high-quality, affordable sports equipment.
In this effort, the Budget suggested a specificprogram for sports products that will enhance manufacturing, research, and innovation in equipment design and material science.
Significantly, Jalandhar is recognized for producing sports equipment.
The CHAMPIONS portal at the Centre will be enhanced with AI and Machine Learning technologies. This will guarantee quicker resolution of grievances for MSMEs and assist in automatically pin pointing regions where small industries encounter raw material shortages.
This portal aims to directly link MSMEs to global markets. An Export Desk will be established to enhance the visibility of products like hosiery from Ludhiana and sports goods from Jalandhar on international e-commerce platforms.
The Centre has introduced special incentives for farmers to encourage them to diversify beyond wheat and paddy. Incentives have been revealed for the cultivation of oilseeds and pulses.
Opposition criticizes Centre for overlooking Punjab in Budget 2026
Opposition party leaders are dissatisfied with the Union Budget 2026 presented by the Centre.
Punjab LoP Pratap Bajwa posted on X, “Budget 2026-27 confirms Punjab has been completely forgotten. No relief for Annadata farmers, no jobs roadmap for our youth, no plan for industry or cities. Big words changed, ground reality unchanged “reforms” that never arrive.”
Grand speeches altered, actual situation the same “reforms” that never come. Twelve years of BJP in authority, yet no response for Punjab. Without vision or determination there aren’t even any slogans remaining to justify this disregard.
