Bangladesh invites PM Modi to attend PM Tarique Rahman Swearing-In on Feb 17

Following the announcement of the results of the elections, the PM Modi held a telephonic conversation with Rahman and extended his congratulations.

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi has been invited to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Tarique Rahman. He is set to take an oath on February 17.

Significantly, the invitation has been extended to 13 nations across the world for the oath taking ceremony of PM Rahman. And, India is one of them. Other twelve countries include China, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkey, UAE, Qatar, Malaysia, Brunei, Sri Lanka, Nepal, the Maldives and Bhutan.

The invitation notably was extended by the Chief Adviser of the interim Government, Muhammad Yunus.

After the ouster of Sheikh Hasina, the leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won the country’s first general elections. The BNP won 209 seats out of 297 member parliament. The right wing; Jamaat-e-Islami clinched 68 seats. The Awami League, led by Former PM Sheikh Hasina did not contest the election.

The Polls notably recorded a voter turnout of 59.44%, marking a significant political shift in the country.

PM Rahman’s victory signals of BNP’s return to the governance after nearly two decades. Tarique Rahman is the son of Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and the late President Ziaur Rahman, has returned to power after spending 17 years in self-imposed exile in London.

Following the announcement of the results of the elections, the PM Modi held a telephonic conversation with Rahman and extended his congratulations. India’s PM then shared a post on “X” account, reaffirming India’s aspirations of the people of Bangladesh.
