A 35 year old man died after falling into a 20-foot-deep trench near an under-construction bridge in Kangniwal village on the Jandu Singha–Lamma Pind road late Sunday night.

The accident happened around 11 pm when the man was riding his motorcycle. Reports say there were no proper warning signs, crash barriers, or diversion boards at the construction site. The area was also poorly lit, making it difficult to see the deep trench at night.

The biker fell straight into the trench. Iron rods placed inside for bridge construction pierced his eyes. There was no one nearby to help him in the dark, and he died on the spot.

However, PWD officials claimed that warning drums and diversion signs had been placed. They said the biker may not have noticed them because he was driving at high speed.

The body was found the next morning. At first, the man could not be identified because his purse was missing. Some anti-social elements had allegedly stolen it. Later, police identified him through his motorcycle registration number as Vikas Jassar from Phillaur. His family also told police that his gold chain was missing.

Labourers working at the site said they heard a scream during the night but did not go out to check.

Former village sarpanch Gurvinder Nayyar said this was not the first accident at the spot. He said the road has been under construction for nearly five years and proper safety measures have not been taken. He added that another young man was injured at the same place in January but survived after treatment.

SHO Patara Ram Kishan confirmed that the family has been informed.

Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal said an inquiry has been ordered. The Secretary of the Regional Transport Authority has been asked to submit a report within three days. The DC said action will be taken if any negligence is found. The issue will also be discussed in the next road safety committee meeting.
