Director Imtiaz Ali is heading back to the big screen with a star-studded new project. On Friday, makers officially announced his next feature film, Main Vaapas Aaunga, starring actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh alongside rising stars Sharvari and Vedang Raina.

The announcement came with a teaser that promises a sweeping story of love, longing, and the scars left by history. Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah also joins the cast in a pivotal role.

Set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition of India, the film explores a romance that spans decades. The story follows a young man, played by Vedang Raina, who falls in love in the pre-Partition era. The narrative then jumps through time, with Naseeruddin Shah playing the older version of Raina’s character and Diljit Dosanjh portraying his grandson.

Director Imtiaz Ali, known for his deep dives into human emotion, stated that the film is rooted in real-life accounts.

“The biggest story of the century is migration,” Ali said in a statement. “This tale of fiction derives almost entirely from stories of people during the Partition. The past is always present.”

The “Chamkila” Dream Team Returns

This project marks the second collaboration between Ali and Dosanjh following the massive success of their 2024 Netflix hit, Amar Singh Chamkila.

Fans of the director’s signature musical style have even more to look forward to: the film reunites the iconic trio of Imtiaz Ali, composer AR Rahman, and lyricist Irshad Kamil. The team previously delivered chart-topping soundtracks for films like Rockstar, Tamasha, and Highway.

The teaser features Dosanjh’s signature soulful vocals, setting a melancholic yet hopeful tone for what the makers describe as an “intimate and expansive” cinematic experience.

Main Vaapas Aaunga is produced by Applause Entertainment and Window Seat Films. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on June 12.
