The Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Monday adopted a resolution urging the Centre to award the Bharat Ratna, the nation’s highest civilian honor awarded to BSP founder Kanshi Ram. The resolution was proposed to honor the 92nd birth anniversary of the Dalit leader celebrated on Sunday.
The Congress MLAs, headed by Opposition Leader Partap Singh Bajwa, backed the resolution but were quick to highlight that just yesterday, party chief Rahul Gandhi made the request in a letter to PM Narendra Modi.

While presenting the resolution, Finance Minister Harpal Cheema stated that the recognition for the deceased Dalit leader would serve as an appropriate homage to him.
“The Savior of the impoverished and oppressed effectively united Dalits, backward classes, and minorities into a cohesive political entity,” he noted.
The resolution sparked a one-hour debate, with members from various parties reflecting on Kanshi Ram’s contribution to the socio-political revival of the “Bahujan Samaj.” BSP lawmaker Nachattar Pal also backed the resolution.

The resolution prompted a debate lasting one hour, with members from various parties recalling Kanshi Ram’s contribution to the socio-political awakening of the “Bahujan Samaj.” BSP lawmaker Nachattar Pal also backed the resolution.
Shortly after the resolution was passed unanimously by lawmakers, chaos erupted in the House when AAP MLA Manjit Singh Bilaspur introduced a censure motion against Bajwa for purportedly making “casteist remarks” directed at PWD Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO during a political rally in Jandiala Guru on February 6.
Labeling it an affront to the Dalits, the treasury benches approved the resolution through a voice vote while the Congress MLAs walked out. Bajwa described this as a “tactical diversion.”
