If a Piped Natural Gas (PNG) line has been laid in your neighborhood, you are now required to switch from LPG cylinders to the pipe system.

The Indian government has announced significant updates to cooking gas distribution rules under the “Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order 2026.” The move aims to modernize fuel delivery and reduce reliance on traditional LPG cylinders.
Newly Announced Key Rules
A list to the rules announced under Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order 2026 are as follows-
Mandatory PNG Connections
If a Piped Natural Gas (PNG) line has been laid in your neighborhood, you are now required to switch from LPG cylinders to the pipe system.
- The 90-Day Rule: Once the pipeline is available, households will receive a notice. If you do not get a PNG connection within 90 days of this notice, your LPG cylinder supply will be cut off.
- For Tenants: Renters are also required to comply. They can apply for the connection themselves or through their landlord. If they move, the security deposit will be refunded.
No More “NOC” Delays from Societies
Previously, many housing societies or Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) delayed pipeline work by refusing permission.
- 3-Day Deadline: Societies must now grant permission for pipeline work within three days of a request.
- Consequences: If a society blocks the installation, the government may stop the LPG cylinder supply to all households within that society.
Faster Government Approvals
To speed up the rollout, the government has set strict timelines for its own departments:
- Small Networks: Approval must be given within 10 days.
- Large Networks: Approval must be given within 60 days.
- Deemed Approval: If the department does not respond within these timeframes, the project will be considered “automatically approved” so work can begin immediately.
Compensation for Landowners
The government has introduced a fixed formula to settle land disputes quickly. Landowners where pipes are laid will receive 30% of the commercial land rate as compensation. If they give permission within 24 hours, this compensation doubles to 60%.
Fuel Supply is Stable
Despite rumors of shortages or “lockdowns” due to international tensions, the Ministry of Petroleum has assured citizens that there is plenty of petrol, diesel, and LPG in stock.
- Refineries are at full capacity: There is no need for panic buying.
- Booking Rules: The time gap between booking cylinders remains the same 25 days for cities and 45 days for rural areas.
Stance on Ethanol Stoves
The government is also working on ethanol-based cooking stoves. This is being developed as a cheaper and safer alternative to traditional gas, helping India become more self-reliant for its kitchen fuel needs.
