A Head Constable of the Chandigarh Police faces severe allegations after being accused of driving while being drunk and causing several accidents late Thursday night in Chandigarh. The incident led to chaos in the area, attracted a large crowd, and incited public outrage as videos concerning the situation circulated widely on social media.
The accused police officer has been identified as Head Constable Jaipal, who allegedly drove a Hyundai Venue vehicle that initially struck a young man on an Activa scooter near the government school in Pocket No. 1 behind the Civil Hospital area. The injured youth is identified as Kuldeep Chand.
Accounts indicate that Kuldeep Chand was riding his scooter in the area when a fast-moving car reportedly struck his Activa from behind with significant force, causing Kuldeep to tumble onto the road and incur severe injuries, including a reported fracture in his right arm from the accident.
Witnesses reported that rather than halting after the crash, the accused Head Constable supposedly tried to escape the scene, however, nearby locals and onlookers allegedly pursued the vehicle upon seeing the event. During this, the accused struck another Activa rider close to Mori Gate market, inciting additional alarm among those nearby.
Shortly after the second crash, furious locals encircled the vehicle, preventing the accused from fleeing, and individuals at the scene reportedly detained the police officer before turning him over to the authorities.
A specific detail from the incident drew significant public interest and rapidly became a topic of discussion on social media. Eyewitnesses claimed that the accused Head Constable was reportedly wearing mismatched shoes during the event. Some people alleged that he wore a woman’s shoe on one foot and a slipper on the other, while many bystanders appeared to laugh in disbelief, with others raising concerns about the state in which the police officer was supposedly driving.
After the incident, a group assembled at the location, chanting slogans criticizing the police administration, while many expressed their anger and frustration regarding the situation. Several locals raised concerns about public safety and claimed that harsh measures are frequently enforced against ordinary citizens, but when police officers are accused of misconduct, the situation is supposedly addressed in a different manner.
Individuals at the location reportedly expressed worries regarding accountability in the police department, with some claiming that in numerous cases involving officers, officials are merely transferred or reassigned rather than facing severe legal repercussions.
Upon getting details regarding this incident, police officers from the Manimajra police station arrived at the location, where the accused Head Constable Jaipal was apprehended, and an ongoing investigation into the matter has commenced.
