India Aims for Weekly Rocket Launches in 5 Years: PM Modi on National Space Day

PM Modi reportedly said that the country sees five to six major launches in a year. And, in the next five years, he wants to set a goal to be able to launch one rocket every week which means 50 launches a year.

The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on Saturday virtually addressed the public on the occasion of National Space Day. The PM extended greetings to the citizens mentioning the nation’s space power and Mission Gaganyaan. 

“India is also preparing its astronaut pool. I appeal to the youth to join this pool,” said the PM.

The Prime Minister said that the ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) has initiated the Indian Space Hackathon and Robotics Challenge to increase youth’s interest in the space field. Continuing his words, he stressed on this year’s theme, “From Aryabhatta to Gaganyaan.”

He then noted that this year’s theme highlights both; past’s confidence and future’s resolution. “Two years ago, India became the first country to reach the South Pole of the Moon and created history.”

Two years ago, India on August 23, 2023 became the fourth country to land on the Moon. Noting the date, PM Modi then announced the day as “National Space Day” and it gets celebrated every year.

Continuing his address, the Prime Minister mentioned that India has now joined the countries that have space docking and undocking capabilities. He mentioned that three days ago, he met with Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla.”

“With Group Captain Shubhanshu, I have seen the dreams of young India. To advance these dreams, we are also going to prepare India’s astronaut pool. I appeal to the youth to join this pool,” asserted PM Modi.

The Prime Minister then highlighted that the nation has now reached the Moon and Mars. “Now we need to go into the depths of space, where many mysteries of humanity’s future are hidden. Space always reminds us that no milestone is the final milestone,” said PM Modi.

“I believe that there should be no final stop in space sector policies either. That’s why I said from the Red Fort ‘Reform is the path to perform.’ That’s why in the last 11 years, the country has made major reforms in the space sector.”

The government has both the intention and the power to implement the next-gen reforms that the country needs. Space tech is becoming part of governance in India.
