The Supreme Court on August 22, 2025 (Friday) revised the decision made on August 11 about relocating stray Dogs. In its verdict, the Supreme Court has mentioned the return of dogs to their localities in Delhi-NCR after being sterilized, vaccinated and dewormed.
As part of revised regulations, the court has ordered the establishment of feeding zones in the localities. In simple words, there will be special feeding areas in the municipal wards where the dogs will be fed. And, the authorities have strictly asked the public not to feed them on the public streets.
The government has excluded rabid or suspected to be rabid and displaying aggressive behavior. The court has noted that such affected dogs may not be released, and are to be kept in separate shelters.
Highlights to SC’s reversed regulations
- Stray Dogs will be released back to their areas. However, infected dogs are not included for such a decision.
- Public feeding has strictly been forbidden.
- Dogs can only be fed in their designated feeding areas.
- Notice boards shall be placed near feeding areas
Not only this, the court has laid a broad emphasis on this issue, and has sent notices to Secretaries of the Department of Animal Husbandry of all states and UTs (Union Territories). The court has asked for their response to frame national policy to address the serious concern.
Public expression on SC’s verdict on Stray Dogs
After a bench was held in the Supreme Court and the decision has come up as great news, the public is expressing relief. Taking the matter to social media, the public is also claiming it as “The power of public outrage.”
One of the netizens wrote, “The Supreme Court has struck a balanced and compassionate approach on managing stray dogs by prioritizing their sterilisation and health while ensuring public safety through regulated feeding zones.”
People are claiming the decision as “thoughtful ruling that respects both animal welfare and community concerns.”
The joy is not only among the general people, even the TV personalities have come forward to express their happiness on the matter. Star Plus serial “Anupamaa” fame, Rupali Ganguly on her ‘X’ formerly known as twitter account, wrote-
“A big win for compassion! Grateful to the Hon’ble Supreme Court for modifying its order, allowing sterilization & release of stray Dogs.”

Continuing her words, she added, “This step not only safeguards people from rabies & overpopulation risks but also lets our voiceless companions live with dignity. True progress is when compassion and safety walk hand in hand.”
