Story of Kamakhya Temple

Kamakhya Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. This story started when Lord Shiva and Maa Sati (Shiva’s wife) attended the yagya held by Sati’s Father. He insulted Shiva, Sati could not tolerate it and in rage jumped in the yagya. This whole incident provoked Lord Shiva to perform tandava in fear, rage and grief.

He held Maa Sati in his arms, roamed the whole universe. Lord Vishnu (the Preserver) disintegrated the body parts of Shiva’s Ardhangini, wherever the part of Sati’s body fell there formed a Shakti Peeth.

In total there are 51 Shakti Peethas. All these holy places are the symbol of femininity and spiritual energy. Kamakhya Temple stood where Sati’s genitals fell.

The Kamakhya Significance

In the temple, there does not exist any assembled idol. The primary object that is worshipped is a yoni (the vagina). In Kamakhya devalaya, the stone that is shaped like a Yoni is believed to be formed naturally.

Significantly, every year, Ambubachi festival is celebrated at Kamakhya Temple which is celebrated in the months of June and July. During this time, the temple is considered to be at high energy and is closed. The Brahmaputra River which flows by the temple turns red which is believed to be the blood of menstruating yoni of the temple.

The Divinity of Temple

The Kamakhya shrine is the most worshipped for its reproductive powers, for the creation of the world and to respect the cycle of periods and fertility. Most women come to pray for their fertility and to wish for a child from Maa Kamakhya.
