Mumbai-to-Phuket IndiGo Flight Diverted to Chennai Over False Bomb Alert

An IndiGo flight on Friday made an emergency landing at Chennai after getting an alleged bomb threat. The flight was heading from Mumbai to Phuket in Thailand. 

An IndiGo flight on Friday made an emergency landing at Chennai after getting an alleged bomb threat. The flight was heading from Mumbai to Phuket in Thailand. 

However, the CISF (Central Armed Police Force and airport officials claimed the information was a hoax. The authorities, following such a threat, checked the flight but found nothing. Still, the investigations are underway.

“IndiGo flight 6E 1089, operating from Mumbai to Phuket on September 19, was diverted to Chennai due to a security threat noticed onboard,” the airlines said.

As per the established protocol, relevant authorities were informed immediately, and the flight will undergo necessary security checks in Chennai.

“Owing to the night curfew at the Phuket airport, resumption of the journey has been scheduled for later in the night. We are making all efforts to minimise inconvenience to customers, including offering them refreshments and sharing regular updates with them,” the statement said.

“As always, safety and security of our customers, crew and aircraft is our topmost priority,” it added.

Other Bomb Threat Cases in Airlines

It is not the first time that such an incident has happened. Reports reveal that from 2022 to 2025 till July, there have been a total of 881 hoax bomb threats reported. Statistics from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) confirms such a figure.

As per the reports, data is mentioned as follows-

  • Till July 2025, there were 69 cases reported
  • In year 2024, the count was 728
  • However, the records of year 2023 highlight the number as 71, and
  • In 2022, it was 13
