There is no doubt that television has been a useful product of technological progress. However, from the point of its physiological impact on human beings, both positive and negative effects have been observed.
Many research studies have inquired into the effects of television viewing on cognitive processes and social behaviour. Television has a greater effect on children than adults.
Four Reasons how Television impacts the Behavior
Reason 1: Television provides a large amount of information in a very attractive way that attains all the attention as it is in visual mode and this medium is a very strong and powerful medium to instruct. On children it has a major effect as they spend most time watching the content on it.
This reduces their habit of journaling, writing and reading. Also stops the significant physical activity which ruins both mental and physical health.
Reason 2: Television watching may have an effect on children’s ability to concentrate on one specific goal, their creativity and ability to understand, and also their social interactions. On one hand, there are excellent programmes that emphasize positive interpersonal attitudes and provide useful factual information, teaching children how to design and construct certain objects.
On the other hand, these programmes may distract young viewers and therefore with their ability to concentrate on one target.
Reason 3: A specific study on aggressiveness says that children become aggressive if they watch a lot of television. Television shows violence in many ways which often results in change in their own behavior.
Children are learners, so they tend to imitate what they see. They are not mature enough to think of the outcomes of such behaviour. Watching violence may reduce the natural aggressive tendency of the children and this cleans their natural system.
Reason 4: When we consider children and adults together, it is said that a consumerist attitude has developed and this happens due to television watching. Numerous products are advertised and it is very natural for the viewer to get carried away.
All the above information suggests limiting television watching.
