India Lose Gill for Rest of First Test After On-Field Injury on Day 2

Gill grabbed a four for it, but immediately felt pain and discomfort. The physio for the Indian team approached Gill, who was holding the back of his neck.

India will be a batter down in the fourth innings of the first Test versus South Africa as Shubman Gill has been deemed unavailable for any further involvement due to the neck spasm he experienced the day before. BCCI announced that he needed to be transported to the hospital for evaluation following the conclusion of the day’s match on Saturday (November 15)

A little more than an hour into the morning session of Day 2, Gill walked out to bat after Simon Harmer dismissed Washington Sundar. The South Africa off-spinner kept bowling round the stumps to the Indian captain, who slog swept him on the third ball he faced.

Gill grabbed a four for it, but immediately felt pain and discomfort. The physio for the Indian team approached Gill, who was holding the back of his neck.

Following a quick assessment, he had to leave the field injured as his head motion was evidently limited by the spasm. India fell to seven wickets in the next 28 overs, and Gill couldn’t come back as the innings concluded at 189/9. He was later deemed unable to play on the vital Day 3

The BCCI has indicated that he is still being monitored in the hospital. It is unclear whether he will return fit for the second match of the series, which begins in six days in Guwahati.
