Its satisfaction results in feeling of immense happiness and well-being in an individual. Moreover, it is essential for the continuation and survival of the human species.

Sex is a psycho-physical motive. Sex is said to be a powerful biological drive, though it is not necessary for survival like food, water, oxygen, etc. Satisfaction of the sex urge or desire to seek sex-experiences is although not essential for the survival of an individual. It is the strongest human urge in the satisfaction to which lies the proper growth and development, and well-being of an individual.

Its satisfaction results in feeling of immense happiness and well-being in an individual. Moreover, it is essential for the continuation and survival of the human species. Sex drive in the civilized and urban societies is particularly suppressed by the social traditions and cultural restrictions. But suppression of sexual drive is dangerous for good health and normal personality development.

The studies indicate that the strength of the sexual drive depends upon the chemical substances present in the blood. Investigations also show that secretion from the sex gland produces strong sex drive. Hormones from the endocrine glands produce change in sex drive. Hormone called Testosterone secreted in the testes of the males and Estrogens secreted in the ovaries of females are considered responsible for the sexual drive and sexual behaviour.

Lindgren and Petsinich observed that the human sex drive seems to be stimulated by three classes of events: (i) the presence of sex hormones, (ii) external stimulation, (iii) cerebral activity. Human sex motive is termed as a complex blend of innate as well as acquired tendencies.

Much of motivation in the form of sexual arousal and behaviour is rooted in earlier experiences and social learning and controlled by lesions in the hypothalamus, the sub-cortical structure in the brain. In practice, the sex game is more psychological than biological or organic.

The other variables or factors related to one’s socio-cultural environment, sexual experiences, and learning also play a significant role in guiding and deciding the mode or method and nature of the sex drive and behaviour in human beings independently of their fertility period and secretion of hormones. Cognitive factors such as our thoughts, feelings, fantasies, perceptions, attitudes, and memories, etc. play a powerful role in sexual motivation
