Environmental Management: The need for the Development

Unbearable damage has been done to biodiversity and eco-systems of the world. Renewable and Non renewable resources are depleting at a high speed.

Environmental management means effective and active measures to be taken to protect, conserve the present state of environment, heritage and improve the control and management of air and water pollution. It lays stress on the control of environment, planning and implementation of actions taken to control environmental damage and prevent the exploitation of resources.

Environmental management is the planning and control measures, policy making and monitoring of environment in such a way that development occurs without much harming the environment. Environmental management includes prevention and control measures, policy making and quality of environment. It is directly linked with national development.

This environmental management includes prevention and control measures, policy making and environmental monitoring. Industrial countries have achieved a decent standard of living by causing environmental damage while the developing countries are struggling to attain a minimum standard of living though they are also contributing towards environment damage and economic growth.

Development: It is growth or advancement. It may be said like this development of a country is growth or advancement. A developed country is a country that is technologically advanced and has high national income. Those countries which have higher Gross Domestic Products (GDP) or Gross National Product (GNP) are considered to be developed countries. A developing country is one which progresses towards achieving the growth so as to give the same standard of living to its citizens.

Elements of development include (i) Increase in real income per capita (ii) education achievement and assurance of basic human rights.

Need of Environmental Management

  • Man thinks himself a superior entity with endless hunger for power, prosperity and prestige. Forgetting his harmonious relationship with nature he used his intellect over power and conquer it. Industrial and urbanization are important factors of economical development.
  • The industrial evolution and development put all the moral values, traditional rituals and religious belief aside. The main purpose of development has been reduced to the development of things and not that of man. This attitude has threatened the very existence of man on earth. Due to man’s neglect attitude about 50% of land becomes infertile.
  • Unbearable damage has been done to biodiversity and eco-systems of the world. Renewable and non renewable resources are depleting at a high speed.
  • Due to man’s reckless industrial activity and increasing population pressure our atmosphere, water, land and forest are being contaminated and polluted.
  • Dams are built on big rivers for irrigation, power generation, water transport. Due to the building of dams, there is a great damage to vast area of forest land, loss of biodiversity of that area, dislocation of large amount of population from their houses and that area becomes prone to earth quake.
  • The main causes of environmental problems are the results of modern agricultural practices industrialization, urbanization, population growth and our life style. These are also necessary from the development point of view so as to raise our standard of living and improving the quality of life.
  • The need of environment management can be viewed from a variety of perspectives, like carry capacity. It refers to the maximum number of organism a particular resource can sustain. In ecological term the carrying capacity of an ecosystem is the size of the population that can be supported indefinitely upon the available resources and services of the ecosystem.
