Former cricketer and current Member of Parliament Harbhajan Singh raised a red flag in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, warning that children are being exposed to “obscene” content on social media at an alarming rate.

During a discussion in the House, Singh urged the government to step in and tighten regulations on digital platforms to safeguard the younger generation.

Singh pointed out that while social media is a great tool for staying connected, it is now being misused to spread inappropriate material. He specifically called out platforms like Instagram, noting that some users post content that looks like “soft pornography.”

He expressed deep concern that children as young as 12 or 13 can access this explicit material with just a single click, often without understanding what they are seeing.

“Exposing children to such material at a young age is harming our future,” Singh said, adding that the easy availability of pornography has become a major social problem.

Impact on the Youth

The MP warned that seeing this content frequently can change how young people view women. He argued that it leads to the “objectification” of women and can negatively affect how children behave as they grow up.

In order to tackle the issue, he asked the authorities to introduce stricter rules and digital safeguards for social media. And, pass tougher laws to completely ban pornographic websites. He as well added to regulate online platforms more effectively.

He concluded by saying that such content offers no benefit to society and only leads to a decline in moral values.
