A 73-year-old man died on Friday morning after a private bus struck his scooter on the Hoshiarpur-Jalandhar road near the Chak Gujran petrol pump. The victim, Resham Singh of Kirti Nagar, was on his way to volunteer at the Radha Soami Satsang Ghar when the accident happened around 8:30 am.
Witnesses and family members stated that a speeding Doaba Roadways bus hit Singh’s scooter from behind. The impact was so severe that the bus dragged the victim for several meters before finally veering off the road and stopping. Singh died instantly at the scene.
Angry family members and locals blocked the highway for nearly four hours, accusing the district administration of being indifferent. The family raised several serious allegations. They claimed another bus from the same company picked up the driver and conductor and helped them flee the scene.
They as well alleged that no officials or ambulances arrived for two hours, leaving the body on the road. Eventually, the family had to transport the body themselves in their own vehicle.
The protest caused a massive traffic jam on the busy Hoshiarpur-Jalandhar route. Travelers were forced to walk on foot or take unpaved backroads to reach their destinations. The blockade only ended after police officials assured the family that they would take strict action against the bus company and the driver.
SHO Parvinderjeet Pal Singh from the Bullowal Police Station confirmed that authorities have identified the driver as Tara Chand. A company inspector has reportedly promised the police that the driver and conductor will surrender soon.
Police have now moved the body to the Civil Hospital in Hoshiarpur for a post-mortem examination and are currently searching for the accused driver.
