This afternoon, two masked individuals robbed the cashier of the Punjab National Bank branch in Bank Enclave near Kuki Dhab (Near Mithapur Road, Jalandhar) at gunpoint, making off with cash estimated between Rs 5-7 lakh.
The young people arrived on a scooter at around 2:30 pm, their faces obscured by handkerchiefs. One of them remained outside while the other approached the cashier’s window, pointed a pistol at him, and took the money. After placing the cash in their bag, the young person exited and escaped on the scooter. Three to four clients were on the bank property at the time of the event.
The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed inside and outside the bank. Deputy Commissioner of Police (investigation) Manpreet Dhillon reached the spot. He checked the footages with his team. “We found it in the video that the cashier initially resisted giving away the cash but when the gun was pointed at him, he gave up. The loot was made within one minute.
We are collecting all technical evidences available to nail the accused. This was the handiwork of two persons only”, he said.
ADCP (investigation) Jayant Puri, ADCP-2 Rakesh Yadav, ACP Aatish Bhatia, and SHO of Police Division No. 6 Kulwinder Singh, CIA staff Inspector Surinder Kumar and forensic teams also reached the site for investigation. There was no guard in the bank when the incident occurred.
The police have been repeatedly instructing the banks to keep their guards posted to avoid such incidents. The bank was locked from inside after the loot for the police and staff to carry out investigation.
