Flood Fury Grips Mumbai: Death Toll Rises to 8, CM calls 48 hours crucial

According to the reports, the death toll has risen to eight in the last two days. Among the several incidents, a 75 year old woman from Raigad district on Tuesday morning lost her life.

It has been four days and Mumbai is continuously struggling with heavy rains. The recent news on Mithi river’s overflown state has even worsened the situation. The flooding conditions have led to serious disruptions to public lives.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red  alert, extending the warnings of continuous extremely heavy rains. 

CM Fadnavis’ note on Maharashtra’s Monsoon situations

The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, having noticed the situation, has stated that 48 hours are crucial. He has placed high alert and has ensured the public that authorities are monitoring the conditions.

He further laid an emphasis on the operations of rescue teams. He noted that hundreds of people have been rescued from flooded areas, and are now at safer locations. Adding to it, disaster response units as well are deployed across disaster prone areas.

Authorities however are urging the residents to remain indoors, exercise caution. 

Death Toll rises to 8, Hundreds evacuated

There have been several life taking incidents reported amid monsoon hovac. According to the reports, the death toll has risen to eight in the last two days. Among the several incidents, a 75 year old woman from Raigad district on Tuesday morning lost her life.

Another incident claims that a landslide struck a house in Mithekhar village, Murud tehsil. Police officials reported the death of a person named Vitha Motiram Gaikar.

Disaster prone areas are being closely monitored. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the army with their joined hands are making the rescue operations.  As its part, more than 290 people have been moved to safer locations from the villages of Nanded district.

Mithi River breaches Danger Mark

Extremely heavy rainfall led Mithi river to cross its danger level. Its level surged to approximately 3.75 m at 9:16 am (Tuesday morning). This led the low lying areas of Krantinagar slum in Kurla to a danger mark.

Considering the seriousness of the matter, almost 400 residents were evacuated ensuring their safety. They were given shelters at the Meganlal Mathuram Municipal School.

As per the sources, several of the rail services as well were suspended. Particularly, the service suspension was on the Central Railway’s Main and Harbour lines. Such an action was taken as it links to the “Mithi River.”

Even the flights, schools and most of the offices are shut. Waterlogging and disruptions were seen across many areas including Andheri, Goregaon and Kurla.
