A shocking incident has come from Karnataka’s Mandya district where a 56-year-old woman and her 33-year-old lover have been arrested for allegedly conspiring to murder her husband. The woman, a grandmother of four, was taken into custody this week along with her younger paramour, who had been absconding since the crime.
The victim, 60-year-old Chandrashekar is a farmer from Maddur taluk in Mandya, was reported missing by family members in June. His body was later found dumped in a canal, with injuries giving the signals of foul play.
Initially, the case was being seen as an accidental drowning. However, the wife’s statements gave a turn to the case, and caught the attention of investigators.
According to the Mandya police, the accused had been in a relationship with her lover, Rajesh who is a daily wage laborer from a nearby village. Their relationship reportedly began over a year ago, intensified in recent months, leading the duo to allegedly carry forward a plan to take Chandrashekar’s life.
Police sources revealed that the accused began plotting the murder in early May. The plan involved luring Chandrashekar to an isolated location under the pretext of a family function. On the night of June 9, the wife convinced her husband to accompany her to a relative’s house on the outskirts of the village. Rajesh and another accomplice, whose identity is still under investigation, allegedly intercepted the couple on the way.
Chandrashekar was then assaulted with blunt objects and strangled before his body was dumped into a canal to simulate an accidental fall. The accused allegedly fled the scene, while the wife returned home the next morning and claimed her husband had not returned from the function, showing concern and joining the family’s search efforts.
The police then carried out an investigation, but suspicions grew when inconsistencies emerged in the wife’s statement. Her frequent communication with Rajesh before and after the incident, traced through mobile data, raised further red flags.
Upon questioning, neighbors disclosed having seen a labourer visiting the victim;s wife frequently, often in her husband’s absence. The police further traced the boyfriend who had gone into hiding in a neighboring district. After interrogation, he reportedly confessed to the crime and mentioned the victim’s wife as the mastermind.
Superintendent of Police (Mandya), K. Suresh, confirmed the arrests during a press briefing on Monday. “This was a premeditated murder motivated by an illicit relationship. The level of planning involved suggests the intent was clear. We are currently investigating the involvement of a third person who may have assisted in the execution,” he said.
