‘Only 2 Ft below 1988 Floods’: Schools shut as floods wreak havoc in Punjab

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has made this official statement of school closure from August 27 to 30 viewing the flood-like situations in Punjab State.

The Punjab government has decided to shut down schools for four days, beginning Wednesday, due to heavy rains and flood threat.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has made this official statement viewing the flood-like situations in Punjab State. He made this announcement, taking the matter to his ‘X’ formerly known as Twitter account. 

“Due to continuous heavy rainfall over the last few days. And, the Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy to extremely rainfall in the coming days. All Government and Private Primary, Secondary, Senior Secondary Schools will remain closed from August 27 to 30,” read the CM’s Twitter post.

Flood Like Situations in Punjab

Punjab has been receiving massive rain. This has led to heavy water flowing in the rivers; Beas and Satluj, possessing high flood risks in Punjab.

Many regions including Kapurthala district, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Firozpur, Fazilka, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot are already affected by floods. This situation is deteriorating, there is a high risk of even more severe flooding in the coming days.

There have been several videos circulating on social media giving the visuals of the situations of Punjab. One of the users addressing the concerns, praying for Punjab shared a post.

“Water inflow at Madhopur Headworks is rising fast, overflowing bridges. Officials say it’s just 2 ft below 1988 flood levels that submerged 9000 villages and displaced 3.4M people. With heavy Himachal rains swelling Sutlej, Beas & Ghaggar, Punjab faces a looming flood threat.”

In many areas of Punjab where the situations are already worsened, there have been rescue operations by the Indian Army. These areas include Kachle, Sujanpur, Pathankot, Makora Pattan, Adalatgarh, Gurdaspur.

There are many people who are even saying that “Punjab is being Deliberately Flooded and Destroyed.” A Person taking it to twitter, mentioned-

“The Beas River embankment breach at Rampur Gauran near Sultanpur Lodhi has widened from 10 to over 250 meters, swallowing houses and threatening dozens of villages.”

“Entire communities in Sultanpur Lodhi and surrounding areas are drowning. After the Sutlej river, the Beas floods have left Sikhs with neither homes nor farmland. While Himachal is safeguarded with dams, the sudden release of water from these dams submerges Punjab every year,” stated the post.

“No relief, no compensation, no government support, Delhi has abandoned Sikhs, treating them only as bodies to sacrifice, never lives to protect.”
