Chandigarh is taking steps to help make the people and pets in the city safer. As part of this effort the city has prohibited six specific breeds of dogs believed to be aggressive or dangerous. This decision is based on the new 2025 Pet and Community Dogs Bye-laws which are intended to promote responsible pet ownership, while also providing for safety and good order in the community.
Six Dog Breeds Banned Lowers the Risk of Dangerous Dogs in Chandigarh
The banning of specific breeds of dogs has rapidly developed into a major topic of discussion in Chandigarh with some believe this will increase public safety while other feel it is unfair to ban specific breeds.
According to reports from NDTV, the breeds that are prohibited include:
- American Bulldog
- American Pit Bull Terrier
- Bull Terrier
- Cane Corso
- Dogo Argentino
- Rottweiler
These breeds are labeled as “aggressive” or “potentially aggressive” due to their power, guarding instincts, and occasionally, previous attack occurrences.
The updated bye-laws specify that no further registrations for these six breeds will be permitted from this point forward.
As per the reports, if one already has any of these dogs, there is nothing to worry about. They can keep them. However, they just have to be sure to follow the safety rules and register the dog with the city.
This is what a person needs to do:
- Always take your dog out on a lead and with a muzzle.
- Ensure that when you are out with your dog, you can handle your dog using good, strong equipment.
- Get a qualified trainer to teach your dog how to settle.
The officials have suggested that these dogs are not supposed to go to crowded public areas in the city, such as Sukhna Lake, Rose Garden, Rock Garden, Leisure Valley or any other park or garden where there are lots of people, according to NDTV.
The new rules limit the number of dogs per household; pet shops and breeders must be registered; dog will also have limits on cleanliness and feeding of community dogs throughout the city.
