The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) is set to move ahead with the establishment of a monthly parking pass for the entire city, which will give the advantage of parking in any paid of parking lots across the city with a single pass to the commuters.

The pass will be obtained at Rs 500 per month for cars and Rs 250 for two-wheelers, thus intended to ease troubles related to parking and at the same time increase the municipal revenue.

As of now, the department has 89 paid parking lots in total, the total area of which is nearly 5.22 lakh square meters and that of 16,030 cars are made available. However, just 73 of them are the ones actively operated, and the other 16 are the ones that stay free due to the insufficient manpower that is why the corporation incurs a loss of revenue greatly.

The one city-one pass is a revolutionary ticketing system that will enable access to all paid parking spots.

The initiative is being executed under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) network with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). It is following the Design, Build, and Operate (DBO) model.

The supervising authority is NHAI, which grants daily kuchas to the toll on the highways, and it will take charge of the parking system thereby assuring the free movements of different vehicles throughout the city.

Initially, the corporation suggested an annual pass tagged at Rs 6,000, but Union Territory administration officials found the price too high, which resulted in alterations made in consultation with NHAI.

Chandigarh currently has the same parking fees all through the day: Rs 14 for cars and Rs 7 for two-wheelers.

The officials of the corporation mentioned that there will not be a necessity to increase the hourly parking rates if many commuters take up the monthly pass. So, the smart parking Request for Proposal (RFP) which suggested the increase in hourly rate will not be tabled at the moment.

Authorities express that the new step is going to help the daily commuters, eliminate the traffic created by the search of parking, and will make it easier to manage the parking areas.
