PM Modi Begins Jordan Visit to Mark 75 Years of India–Jordan Diplomatic Ties

The King of Jordan on Tuesday will be at the event to promote trade and commerce between India and Jordan, which will have many key business figures attending. 

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi began a tour of Jordan on Monday to strengthen the relationship between India and Jordan on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. 

Jordan will be the first stop on Modi’s four-day visit to 3 countries; Oman and Ethiopia. Modi will meet privately with King Abdullah II before he meets with the entire Jordan delegation today. 

The King of Jordan on Tuesday will be at the event to promote trade and commerce between India and Jordan, which will have many key business figures attending. 

Modi will also represent the Indian community while he is in Jordan. Modi will be going to Petra with the Crown Prince of Jordan, which has a shared cultural heritage with India from ancient times, weather permitting.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, this is Modi’s first formal bilaterally-focused trip to Jordan. Prior to this visit to Jordan in February 2018, Modi transited through the country en-route to Palestine.

“The ongoing bilateral visit (by an Indian Prime Minister) is the first instance in 37 years,” stated the Indian Ministry of External Affairs during a special briefing last week in New Delhi. 

“It is important to highlight that during this transit visit, his Majesty the King has offered additional courtesies to him, making it more than just a transit visit.”

India and Jordan are closely connected through trade, with Amman being New Delhi’s third largest trading partner. The total amount bought and sold between India and Jordan is $2.8 billion.

Jordan has a strong presence in supplying India with Fertilizers, especially Phosphate and Potash Fertilizer products.

The Arab country is home to a vibrant Indian diaspora of over 17,500 people employed across sectors such as textiles, construction, and manufacturing.
