Rana Balachauria, a Kabaddi Tournament Promoter and a coach on Monday was shot dead after unidentified people fired a gun while he was playing kabaddi, right in front of fans and other players. The incident occurred during the line Kabaddi match in Sohana, Mohali.
He was taken to Fortis Hospital and was critically injured from being shot in the head. As per the reports, there was major blood loss seen due to which he could not survive. There were reportedly 12 rounds shot at the event.
The attackers came close pretending to be the fans who were trying to take pictures. Such a case highlights the complete failure of the security for the event.
According to eyewitnesses, when the shooting first began, many people thought that the shooting was actually firecrackers being set off. However, once they realised that shots were being fired directly at Rana Balachauria and others at the event, panic spread rapidly.
The shooter(s) attacked the venue just a short period before Mankirt Aulakh was supposed to attend the Kabaddi Cup, which points to the fact that the loss(at that point) of a great singer was going to be a great tragedy.
Mohali SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans stated that 4-5 shots were fired into Rana Balachauria.
The assailants were first thought to have escaped in a Bolero vehicle, but reports have been coming in that some of the assailants may have escaped on motorcycles. It is believed there were approximately three to four assailants.
The Kabaddi Cup is a four-day tournament being held by the Kabaddi Cup Gurdwara Management Committee and Vedwan Sports Club, Sohana.The match was streamed live, so cameras caught the shooting.
The police officials stated that they are investigating the cause. Major forces have been deployed to check every aspect of the incident. They as well have expressed their worry as there were not enough officers present at the event.
For the in-depth investigations, the security camera footage is being checked so the identity of the suspects can be detected.
