The most important dance of Manipur is Rasleela which is an amazing example of Indian Opera. It is based on the immortal stories of Krishna, Radha,Gopies. Role of Krishna can be performed by a boy of 10-12 years old but the role of Radha and Gopis is played by a perfect female dancer. Rasleela is of four types:

  • Vasant Ras
  • Maha Ras
  • Kunj Ras
  • Nitya Ras

The separation of the soul from the Divine Power and dedication by the soul to obtain him is the basic inspiration of all these Rasleelas.

The Connected Folk Tale with Name Manipur

Once Krishna was performing Maharas with Gopies and Nataraja Shiva sought permission to see the dance. Krishna Ji allowed him with the assurance that he should stand at his back towards dance and only can hear the music.

Lord Shiva agreed but the combined sound of Ghungroo, flute and mridangam had such a magical effect, that he forgot his promise, returned to Himalaya and decided to perform Raas with Maa Parvati and chose the place Manipur for it. At that time Shiva Ji invented Pung (mridanga) and Pena instruments which are played with this dance.

This Raas is known as “Lai – Haroba.” The whole province got enlightenment with the Sheshnaag’s gem, hence the land is called Manipur.

Costume and Music of Manipuri Dance

The costume of Rasleela is very attractive and costly. Radha and Gopies wear lehengas which are generally red or green in color. At the lower part of this lehanga, hard board or cane sticks are attached so that it can move in one direction only. Golden worked shiny blouses of gaudy colors are used.

Krishna is shown with Peetambar, Flute, Vajayanti mala and a crown of a peacock feather. Cymbals and Pung are the integral part of manipuri dance.
