The campus was placed under lockdown while officers searched for the suspects. This marks the 41st homicide in Toronto this year.

A 20-year-old Indian student named Shivank Avasthi was shot and killed near the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) campus.

The Indian consulate in Toronto expressed great sadness about Avasthi’s death and said it was working closely with authorities to provide assistance to Avasthi’s family.

Police reported that Avasthi was found on Tuesday with a gunshot wound in the Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road area and was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspects fled before police arrived.

The campus was placed under lockdown while officers searched for the suspects. This marks the 41st homicide in Toronto this year. Avasthi was a third-year life science student and lived at home, as do many other UTSC students who leave their homes to go to class.

After Avasthi was shot, students expressed their fear and anger on social media, particularly regarding the lack of security on campus.
