When the police attempted to stop him, the suspect abandoned the motorcycle and opened fire at the police team.

A gangster was killed in an encounter with the police in Tarn Taran district after an exchange of fire during a late-night operation, officials said.

According to DIG Snehdeep Sharma, teams from the Tarn Taran CIA and the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) were conducting the operation based on specific intelligence inputs. The police team spotted and chased a suspect riding a motorcycle.

When the police attempted to stop him, the suspect abandoned the motorcycle and opened fire at the police team. The police retaliated, leading to a brief gunfight.

During the encounter, a bullet hit a police officer, but his bulletproof vest prevented any serious injury. The suspect was also shot and was rushed to the hospital, where he later died due to his injuries.

The deceased has been identified as Harnoor, a resident of Kathu Nangal. Police said he was a close associate of gangsters Prabh Dasuwal and Afridi and was involved in field-level operations for the duo. A pistol was recovered from his possession.

Police also said Harnoor was allegedly involved in the conspiracy behind the murder of AAP Sarpanch Jarmal Singh in Amritsar and was linked to the module busted in the case related to Lok President Harman Sekhon.

Further investigation is underway.
