Indian Sarabjit Kaur Stopped at Attari-Wagah, Remains in Pakistan Custody

According to a recent update, officials in Pakistan have stated that the permit could be granted by next week, allowing her to return to India thereafter.

While Sarabjit Kaur was supposed to come back to India through the Attari-Wagah border, just before her exit the Pakistan Interior Ministry rescinded their approval for her to return. Sarabjit Kaur remains in the custody of Women’s Shelter Home in Lahore, Pakistan, under close police protection, until she is granted a special travel permit from the Pakistani government.

The Pakistan Interior Ministry has stated that she will remain at this location until that document has been signed. Sarabjit Kaur was part of a group of Indian pilgrims travelled to Pakistan to commemorate the 556th Parkash Purab of Guru Nanak Dev ji on November 4, 2025, and was scheduled to return to India with the same jatha on November 13, 2025.

However, when the Jatha returned to India, Sarabjit Kaur had gone missing in Pakistan.

Following this, officials in Pakistan located her in the Nankana Sahib district on January 4. While she was in Pakistan, her visa expired on November 13, 2025, leading to a request for a special permit from Pakistani authorities for her to return to India.

According to a recent update, officials in Pakistan have stated that the permit could be granted by next week, allowing her to return to India thereafter. In the midst of this, a comprehensive medical evaluation of Sarabjit Kaur took place on January 9, 2026, during which doctors revealed that she is in good health and does not need any medical care currently.

Sarabjit Kaur’s attorney, Ali Sandhu, informed the Lahore High Court that the case is presently in legal proceedings, and he guarantees that the court along with other pertinent departments are promptly reviewing the issue and fulfilling all necessary formalities to ensure Sarabjit’s return is facilitated smoothly.
