A Hindu youth was killed in a shocking incident in Bangladesh’s Rajbari district after he asked for payment for fuel, raising concerns over the safety of minorities ahead of the country’s general elections.
The victim, identified as 30-year-old Ripon Saha, was working at a petrol pump when a black SUV arrived in the early hours of Friday and filled diesel worth around 5,000 taka. According to reports, the occupants tried to leave without paying. When Ripon attempted to stop the vehicle, he was allegedly run over deliberately, killing him on the spot.
Police have arrested the owner of the SUV, Abul Hashim, a former office-bearer of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), along with the driver. Officials said an investigation is underway to determine the full sequence of events.
The incident comes amid reports of rising violence against the Hindu community in Bangladesh ahead of the February 12 general elections. According to the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, 51 cases of communal violence were recorded in December 2025.
Recent incidents include the killing of a jeweller in Narsingdi and the murder of a garment factory worker in Mymensingh, allegedly set on fire by a mob.
