Over 5,000 killed in Iran Protests Since December 2025, Officials Say

The cause for this has been stated as economic struggles which intensified over two weeks into major protests.

The officials from Iran on Sunday reported that over 5,000 individuals have lost their lives in protests in Iran. These include around 500 security forces, referencing confirmed statistics and blaming “terrorists and armed extremists” for the deaths of “Innocent Iranians.”

The protests began in the month of December in 2025 on 28th date. The cause for this has been stated as economic struggles which intensified over two weeks into major protests demanding the end of clerical governance, leading to the unrest since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to intervene if protesters continued to be killed on the streets or were executed. In a social media post on Friday, he thanked Tehran’s leaders, saying they had called off scheduled mass killing.

On Saturday, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said: “We will not drag the country into war, but we will not let domestic or international criminals go unpunished,” state media reported. On Sunday, the judiciary indicated that executions may go ahead.

“Iranian judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir statedat a press conference that a setof actions has been classifiedas Mohareb, considered oneof the harshest Islamic penalties.”

Mohareb, an Islamic legal concept referring to fighting against God, is subject to capital punishment according to Iranian law.

During a Saturday interview with, Trump stated, “it’s time to seek new leadership in Iran.”

Khamenei, Iran’s highest leader, blamed the nation’s longstanding adversaries, the U.S. and Israel, for instigating the violence, recognizing “several thousand deaths.”

The HRANA rights organization based in the U.S. reported on Saturday that the death count had climbed to 3,308, with an additional 4,382 instances being examined. The organization stated it had verified over 24,000 detentions.

The regional Iranian official stated that the confirmed death toll was improbable to rise significantly.

“The ultimate count is not anticipated to rise dramatically,” the official stated, remarking that “Israel and militant factions overseas” had backed and supplied those who protested.
