Punjab’s agricultural economy is staring at a potential crisis. The Middle East is the primary buyer of Indian Basmati rice, and Punjab contributes nearly 40% of the country’s total Basmati exports.

As tensions between Iran, Israel, and the U.S. escalate into a devastating conflict, the effects of it are being seen across India with Punjab facing significant disruptions in travel, trade, and its labor force.
The foremost is seen as Aviation Crisis. After the tensions escalated between three nations, thousands of people were seen stranded as several airspaces were closed. Reportedly, more than 350 and 410 international flights were cancelled on Sunday and Saturday respectively.
This laid major impact with many Indians facing issues like:
- At Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport, at least 10 major flights to Doha, Sharjah, and Dubai were cancelled.
- Prominent figures, including Olympic medalist PV Sindhu and various political leaders, are among the thousands of Indians currently stranded in Dubai and other Gulf nations.
- Stranded passengers, including a college principal from Bathinda, have issued video appeals seeking Indian Government’s help, reporting that they are running out of money and essential medicines as hotels demand they vacate rooms.
Economic Threat: Basmati Rice Exports at Risk
Punjab’s agricultural economy is staring at a potential crisis. The Middle East is the primary buyer of Indian Basmati rice, and Punjab contributes nearly 40% of the country’s total Basmati exports. Following this, the Indian Rice Exporters Federation has advised its members not to sign new contracts with Gulf nations.
In addition to rice, exports of hosiery, auto parts, and hand tools from Punjab are also expected to suffer.
Fuel and Gold: Prices Set to Surge
While India currently maintains a 10-day emergency reserve of crude oil, the long-term outlook is concerning. Crude oil recently closed at a seven-month high of $73 per barrel. Experts warn that if supply chains are blocked, prices could quickly hit $80 per barrel, leading to a spike in local petrol and diesel costs.
Investors project that gold prices are likely to increase drastically, touching the bar between Rs 1.6 Lakh to Rs 1.9 Lakh per tola, while silver could touch Rs 3.5 Lakh per kg.
Education and Labor: Board Exams Postponed
The instability has directly impacted the Indian diaspora and students living in the Middle East.
- CBSE Exams: Due to the worsening situation, the CBSE postponed the 10th and 12th-grade board exams scheduled for March 2nd in the Middle East region.
- Labor Anxiety: With millions of Indians including over 38 lakh in the UAE and 27 lakh in Saudi Arabia—working in the region, families in Punjab and Haryana are in a state of constant anxiety over the safety of their breadwinners.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi stated that the Indian government is closely monitoring the situation and is committed to the safe return of all citizens stranded abroad. The Ministry of External Affairs has also issued advisories for foreign nationals in India whose travel has been affected, providing assistance for visa extensions.
