Ex-Akali Leader arrives as Groom with Band-Baaja at Police Station over AAP’s unfulfilled Rs 1,000 promise

Vijay Kumar presented a unique grievance to the police. Playing the role of a prospective groom, he claimed that his own marriage proposal had collapsed due to the government’s inaction.

A former Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) municipal councillor staged a high-drama protest outside the Canal Colony police station on Saturday.

Dressed in full wedding attire, complete with a traditional sehra (floral veil), Vijay Kumar arrived at the station gates not to fetch a bride, but to lodge a formal complaint against the state government. Accompanied by a brass band and riding a decorated chariot, the “groom” accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of shattering marital prospects across the state by failing to fulfill its pre-poll promise of a Rs 1,000 monthly allowance for women.

A “Broken” Marriage Proposal

Vijay Kumar presented a unique grievance to the police. Playing the role of a prospective groom, he claimed that his own marriage proposal had collapsed due to the government’s inaction. He told officers that he had assured his would-be bride and her family that she would receive the promised financial assistance once the new government took charge.

“I even filled out the application forms for my fiancée and three other women in her family before the wedding date,” Kumar alleged. He claimed that when he arrived with the baraat (wedding procession), the bride’s family turned him away. According to his complaint, the family accused him of making false promises and sent the procession back in a fit of rage.

While the scene drew a massive crowd of curious onlookers and passersby, Kumar later clarified the satirical nature of his protest. Speaking to The Tribune, he revealed that he is already happily married to Sharma Rani, who is also a former municipal councillor.

“I am married. This was my symbolic way of protesting and demanding that the government fulfill its promise of providing Rs 1,000 per month to every woman in Punjab,” Kumar explained. He noted that the timing of his protest falling a day before the state Budget and International Women’s Day was intentional.

Despite the theatrical delivery, the police treated the matter with procedural seriousness. Kumar emerged from the station claiming that officials had accepted his written complaint. “The police have recorded my statement and assured me of action. Their response was positive,” he told reporters.

Vijay Kumar is no stranger to such theatrics; he has built a local reputation for staging unusual and attention-grabbing protests to highlight civic and political issues. As the state government prepares to present its Budget on Sunday, this “groom’s” message serves as a loud reminder of the high expectations surrounding the AAP’s flagship welfare promises.
