A massive fire tore through a powdered color (‘gulal’) manufacturing unit in Haryana’s Jind district on Saturday, claiming the lives of four women workers. At least 11 other employees sustained injuries as they scrambled to escape the smoke and flames.
The tragedy unfolded in a residential area of Bhaat Colony in Safidon. According to police reports, the fire erupted at the factory’s main entry point. Within minutes, thick smoke engulfed the interior of the building, trapping the workers inside.
The situation quickly turned dire as workers realized their primary exit was blocked by the blaze. In a desperate bid to save their lives, several employees reportedly climbed onto the roof and jumped to the ground.
Local residents were the first to respond, rushing toward the factory as the fire spread. Soon after, police teams and Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene. To reach those trapped inside the blazing structure, rescuers and locals worked together to tear down a boundary wall, creating a path for the workers to escape.
Authorities pressed several fire engines into service to douse the flames. Meanwhile, a fleet of ambulances rushed to the site, transporting the injured victims to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.
Jind Superintendent of Police (SP) Kuldeep Singh confirmed the fatalities following the rescue operation. He stated that all four victims were women. Three of the deceased were approximately 50 years old, while the fourth victim was 36 years old.
“Around 10 to 11 people sustained injuries in the incident,” SP Singh said. “They are currently undergoing treatment at a hospital, and we have launched a full investigation into the matter.”
While the fire caused significant damage to the facility and heartbreaking loss of life, the exact cause of the spark remains a mystery. Investigators are currently examining the site to determine whether a short circuit or a chemical mishap triggered the blaze.
Questions are also being raised regarding the factory’s location within a crowded residential neighborhood and whether the unit followed necessary fire safety protocols. Police officials stated that further legal action will depend on the findings of the ongoing probe.
