According to the Jathedar, the university administration used “forceful measures” instead of listening to the students’ objections.

Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, the acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, has strongly condemned the Panjab University administration and Chandigarh Police for their treatment of Sikh students.

In a statement released on Monday, the Jathedar demanded strict action against officials involved in a recent clash on campus. The trouble began when students from Sikh-ideology groups raised concerns about an event marking the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur.

What Happened at the Protest?

According to the Jathedar, the university administration used “forceful measures” instead of listening to the students’ objections. He argued that it is the basic duty of a university to hear out its students, rather than silencing them.

The situation reportedly escalated when the Chandigarh Police intervened. Jathedar Gargaj highlighted several serious allegations:

  • Police used physical force against the protesters.
  • Officers allegedly removed the turbans of some Sikh students.
  • The Jathedar called this a “grave disrespect” to the Sikh faith and its sacred symbols.

“Such actions cannot be tolerated under any circumstances,” Jathedar Gargaj stated.

The Jathedar reminded the authorities of the very teachings they were supposed to be honoring. He noted that Guru Tegh Bahadur taught followers to live without fear and to never instill fear in others. He said the university’s “coercion and intimidation” go directly against these Sikh philosophies.

He concluded by asserting that the right to protest is a fundamental right. He is now calling for a full investigation to ensure accountability and to make sure such an incident never happens again.
