A house in Ward No. 34 of Shekhupur was robbed last night. The family was not at home when the thieves broke in. They broke the locks, searched the rooms, and stole valuables worth about Rs 75 lakh.

The incident came to light at approximately 2:30 a.m. when the homeowner, Sumit, returned with his family from a wedding ceremony in Hoshiarpur. The family had locked the house around 9:00 p.m. the previous evening, only to return a few hours later to find the main door’s locks shattered.

“Everything was in disarray,” Sumit said, describing the scene inside. “The thieves broke into the cupboards and scattered our belongings everywhere. They even took the CCTV DVR to ensure no footage of the crime remained.”

According to the family, the burglars targeted a significant collection of wealth. The stolen items include:

  • Gold: Approximately 45 tolas of jewelry.
  • Silver: Half a kilogram.
  • Currency: ₹4 lakh in cash and $1,000 USD.
  • Electronics: A brand-new tablet.

The stolen jewelry belonged to Sumit’s wife, his sister (who resides in Canada), and his mother, Rita Nair, a resident of the United States.

The City Police Station dispatched a team to the spot immediately after receiving the report. Investigating officers spent the early morning hours scanning CCTV footage from neighboring houses and businesses, hoping to catch a glimpse of the suspects’ arrival or escape.

By morning, a specialized dog squad from Kapurthala arrived to inspect the crime scene and track any scents left behind by the intruders.

“We are pursuing several leads and checking all available surveillance in the vicinity,” a police spokesperson stated. “The investigation is ongoing, and we expect to make arrests soon.”

Sumit has made an urgent plea to the police administration to expedite the case and recover the stolen property, which holds significant sentimental and financial value for his family.
