Her comments such as calling Gandhi “pappu” and claiming that a “Rs 500 crore suitcase” swayed leadership decisions in Congress sparked controversy and widened the divide within the party.

In a development that may intensify the already unstable political environment in Punjab, Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu, the wife of former cricketer and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, has declared the formation of a new political party, the Bhartiya Rashtrawadi Party.
The announcement arrives just two months following her sudden departure from the Congress. After facing intense backlash directed at party leader Rahul Gandhi and Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, she was initially suspended and subsequently expelled.
Her comments such as calling Gandhi “pappu” and claiming that a “Rs 500 crore suitcase” swayed leadership decisions in Congress sparked controversy and widened the divide within the party.
As Navjot Kaur confronts the Congress, Navjot Singh has remained distant from politics. Significantly, his X account still features Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi in the cover image, whom he frequently refers to as his mentors and “guiding angels.”
Although the main parties have not released official statements, sources indicated that the action intended to further divide anti-incumbency votes before the 2027 Assembly elections. Navjot Singh’s positionin the new organization is uncertain, with some suggesting he might prioritize his career in the entertainment field.
In an elaborate social media post, Dr. Sidhu referred to the decision as a “long-anticipated declaration” inspired by divine intervention.
She mentioned that a collective of similar-thinking people had united after assessing the effectiveness of current political leaders, with the goal of creating a national-level alternative centered on justice, peace, and elevated awareness.
The party’s primary attention, however, stays distinctly on Punjab.
“A government of the people, for the people and by the people of Punjab,” she said, adding that the initiative would heal “wounded souls” through the path of “truth and love, the language of Waheguru Ji.”
Dr Sidhu has had a chequered political journey. She won as a BJP MLA from Amritsar East in 2012 before joining the Congress along with her husband, who served as Punjab Congress chief.
