The Jalandhar City Railway Station is poised for significant change through a modernization initiative costing approximately Rs 90–95 crore, with the goal of offering travelers improved, more comfortable, and airport-like amenities.

The project is set to be finalized in two stages, with progress already ongoing.

In the first phase major construction work will take place at the main entrance and the current station building will be demolished and replaced with a new and modern structure.

A broad 12-meter Foot Over Bridge (FOB) will be constructed to link Platform 1 with Platforms 2 and 3; the existing FOB will be dismantled, and an additional 6-meter-wide FOB will be erected towards the Amritsar side.

A 3-meter-wide subway will be constructed to facilitate movement from the main entrance area to Platform 1, and a goods lift will be installed at one end for added convenience.

Additional enhancements consist of:

  • Improved flooring on Platforms 1, 2-3, 1A, and 1B.
  • Enhancement of the entrance zone and access routes
  • A new Package Office at the primary entrance
  • Relocation of the GRP office and former staff accommodations.

In the next phase, the station will grow towards Kazi Mandi and Surya Enclave, where an additional entry point will be created, and new Platforms 4 and 5 will be constructed as an is land platform. Platform 6 will be linked to the new entry, and the current FOBs will be extended to connect to these added platforms.

A significant alteration will be the addition of six new railway tracks; among these, three tracks will accommodate new platforms, while the remaining three will be utilized for train parking (stabling lines). The goods handling area will be relocated outside the station, creating more room for passenger movement.

Upon completion, the station will be more expansive, contemporary, and simpler to navigate, featuring enhanced bridges, subways, and additional tracks.
