During the Chief Vigilance Officer’s visit in Jalandhar, roughly 50 unauthorized shops were discovered built on JP Nagar Road.

The Municipal Corporation has taken steps against unlawfully built shops on JP Nagar Road. The company’s team recently closed four stores that were constructed without authorized plans. Reports indicate that a few weeks ago, the Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) of the Local Bodies Department in Punjab, accompanied by his team, conducted a raid in Jalandhar following complaints by RTI activist Karanpreet Singh.
During this raid, dozens of illegal constructions built in the city over the past few months were inspected.
During the investigation, it was revealed that due to the negligence of the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation’s Building Department, illegal constructions were rapidly increasing in the city. Despite repeated complaints, these constructions were not stopped, forcing the CVO to personally visit Jalandhar and issue strict instructions to the officials.
During the CVO’s visit, roughly 50 unauthorized shops were discovered built on JP Nagar Road. In this context, the CVO has requested a report from the company officials regarding all unlawful constructions, but no definitive action has been implemented in this issue so far.
Action has already begun on several of the complaints that were examined. In this context, the Municipal Corporation team shutdown four illegal shops on JP Nagar Road. Sources indicate that the Municipal Corporation might enforce stringent measures against additional illegal constructions shortly.
The list of illegal buildings in the city, which reached the Chief Vigilance Officer of the Local Bodies Department, included the Malhotra Chicken Corner building, located near Football Chowk and near Bhatia Eye Hospital. Construction on this building has been ongoing for several months.
It has been learned that the Municipal Corporation had sealed this illegal construction before the CVO team arrived in Jalandhar.
When the vigilance team arrived on the scene, this building was the first to be raided. Officials took photographs on the spot, but were unable to access the upper floors due to the seal. Surprisingly, just a few days after the CVO team returned, a fourth lantern was placed on the building.
RTI activist Karanpreet Singh has filed a complaint with the Local Bodies Department and the Chief Vigilance Officer. The complainant alleges that the fourth lintel on the top floor of the sealed building was placed at the rear, where a bicycle stand currently operates.
It remains to be seen what action the municipal officials or the CVO team will take against this illegal construction.
