Farmers Detained Across Punjab During Two-Hour ‘Rail Roko’ Protest

Farmers attempted to proceed toward the railway station located in the Jalandhar district as an extension of their demonstrations against the government.

Numerous farmers and their leaders were arrested by police at multiple locations in Punjab during their two-hour ‘Rail roko’ protest on Friday to support various demands.

In numerous locations, farmers were apprehended prior to being able to sit on the rail tracks during the demonstration. Nonetheless, they were freed afterward.

Farmers are resisting the Centre’s proposed Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2025, calling it “anti-farmer” and arguing that it would result in privatisation and centralisation of the Indian power sector.

On Friday, the 20th of November, Kisan Mazdoor Morcha called for a two-hour ‘Rail Roko’ protest across Punjab. They requested from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM to make a symbolic stand against trains running throughout the state by halting trains on 26 sites within 19 of the 23 districts.

During this period farmers staged protests at different locations; some were able to reach the tracks while others were detained by law enforcement who would not allow them near the train tracks.

In addition, the farmers were able to occupy the tracks in some locations in addition to being detained; for instance, police confronted a group of farmers protesting at a site near Ferozepur District.

Farmers also protested in multiple areas within Amritsar District.

The protests were created to oppose the proposed Centre Bill and multiple agricultural issues; farmers searched for rail lines near Hoshiarpur District on the Jalandhar-Jammu Highway, where they were able to avoid police detection.

They assembled there to protest.

Farmers were on the track for roughly ten minutes before being dispersed by officers from local law enforcement. Farmworkers attempted to proceed toward the railway station located in the Jalandhar district as an extension of their demonstrations against the government.

Due to the extensive use of barricades by the police, farmers could not reach the tracks.
