41 Girls of 82 People reported Missing in Mumbai in First Week of December

There were a larger number of cases for 18 yr. old than any of the other age groups. The data shows 41 girls and 13 boys missing from the total of 82 cases.

The Midday published information that stated there were 82 individuals that had been reported as missing including children and young people in Mumbai through the first week of December this year.

Many people in Mumbai are now worried and have been putting alerts on WhatsApp groups in the city, including neighbours, about these cases of missing children.

The data analysis done by Midday showed that most of the missing adolescents are aged 18 and over. The Midday article shows that there were a larger number of cases for 18 yr. olds than any of the other age groups. The data shows 41 girls and 13 boys missing from the total of 82 cases.

The data also shows that the youngest missing girl was 5 years old and the youngest boy was 11 years old during the time period of November 1 – December 6, 2018. Several police stations in various neighbourhoods have reported several cases of missing kids indicating that there are still a lot of kids missing in the city of Mumbai.

A police officer stated, “Many missing children are located within the initial days through CCTV footage reviews, technical monitoring, and local investigations, while actions are heightened in cases concerning minors.”

In the neighboring town of Navi Mumbai, 499 children were reported abducted from January to November this year, with the police locating 458 of them, while 41 are still unaccounted for.

Officials reported that among the 458 recovered children, the motives for their disappearances appeared to stem more from emotional turmoil and personal situations rather than criminal activity, with 128 cases related to romantic relationships and 114 involving children fleeing after being reprimanded by their parents.

India has one of the safest major cities in Mumbai. The National Crime Records Bureau’s official report for 2023 states that while Mumbai improved its position in total crime rate (percentage per lakh population) to No. 17 overall, some categories of crime within the city continue to rank comparatively high. 

Mumbai was ranked as No. 2 in crimes against women, including sexual assault and stalking, and ranked second in crimes against children, behind New Delhi.
