Fresh Taxes on Tobacco and Pan Masala to Take Effect from February 1

Starting February 1, a 40 percent GST will be levied on pan masala, cigarettes, and other tobacco items, whereas biris will incur an 18 percent GST.

The government has declared that fresh taxes on tobacco items and pan masala will take effect starting February 1.

With the updated system, these items will still be subject to GST, but the current compensation cess will be eliminated. Instead, pan masala will incur a new Health and National Security Cess, while tobacco and associated products will haveextra excise duty applied.

Starting February 1, a 40 percent GST will be levied on pan masala, cigarettes, and other tobacco items, whereas beedis will incur an 18 percent GST. The Finance Ministry has introduced new regulations to oversee duty collection on chewing tobacco, flavored tobacco, and gutkha production equipment.

In December, Parliament ratified the new laws regarding cess and excise duties. With the announcement made on Wednesday, the existing GST compensation cess on these items will be removed starting February 1.
